Dear Jane - One More Block

Last Thursday I made one more Dear Jane block.

Here's L-13.  I pieced the two drunkard's path quarters and appliqued the other two crescent quarters.  I still struggle with getting applique smooth.

L-13 close up.

This means I have only one full row of blocks left, row M....and then still a million or so triangle blocks.

Minecraft Quilt

The Minecraft Quilt is now in one piece.  I sashed and bordered it with black fabric like the sew along.  However, since a lot of the blocks were just shades of gray and various blocks had different colours in them which didn't appear in any other blocks, I decided to border each block with a contrasting coloured fabric which appeared somewhere else in the quilt.  I really like Wither Skeleton with it's violet border which came from Ender's eyes I also like Slime's facial expression.  I thought the TNT block fit perfectly in the centre of the quilt, first because it was so bright, but also because it isn't a face like the rest of the blocks.

I think it turned out great!  Now to get some backing fabric and get this quilted and bound.

Minecraft Quilt

The baby quilt for my niece Elizabeth and her partner Noam is in the mail for her virtual baby shower.  I didn't know the baby's older brother Blue when he was a baby so he didn't receive a baby quilt from me so I thought I would rectify that by making him a quilt now.  After some discussion it was decided Blue would love a Minecraft quilt.  I know nothing about Minecraft.....but luckily for me there is a Minecraft Sew Along by Kelli Fannin Quilt Design of Seriously I think it needs stitches.  I asked Blue to pick his 9 favourite characters so I could make him a 60" square lap quilt.  The blocks finish at 12".  So here are the nine characters Blue picked and the blocks I made:

Wolf

TNT

Herobrine

Slime

Siamese Cat

Wither Skeleton

Cave Spider

Zombie Pigman

Enderman

I had a ton of fun making these blocks!  This quilt will likely be the start of a new tradition where I will make each of the nieces and nephews a lap quilt when they get into the double digits.

Two Drawstring Bags and Progress on the Mayflower Mystery Quilt #1

Earlier in the week I sewed together a drawstring bag to gift the last Snowflake quilt.  I made the drawstring ties and lining with a red polka dot fabric.

On Saturday I sewed together another drawstring bag to gift the baby quilt for my niece.

The quilt is now all quilted and bound and just requires a bit of embellishment on the bees.  I won't show it on the blog until after she receives it.  Here's a taste of what the quilting looks like on the fleece back though right after I quilted it.  I chose this pantograph because some of the fabrics have little hearts in them and the loopy pattern reminds me of the loopy path the bees have flown.  The scribbly bit of quilting on the upper left is where I was testing the thread tension before starting.  I don't know why the colours of these fabrics don't photograph well.  They are much darker and richer in person.

And after all the odds and ends of sewing done this past week, I finally sewed all the units together for the Mayflower Mystery Quilt #1.  Here are all 840, I mean 84 blocks.

Next week I want to get the snowflake quilt quilted and finish the Bee quilt for my niece and get both in the mail.

Bosom Buddy and an Easy Bag

A friend is going through breast cancer treatment (the prognosis is good) and finding the seatbelt uncomfortable.  I remember seeing a pattern for a Bosom Buddy By Annie and decided to make it for her.  There is a wide padded section with a sleeve attached to it which goes around the seat belt and closes with hook and loop tape.  Here it is with the sleeve open.

Here it is with the sleeve closed.

And in order to gift it I needed a bag.  I had been wanting to try out the Easy Grocery Bag from the Fabric Shop.  The pattern is here and the YouTube Tutorial is here.  Next time I think I would turn under the edges of the handles first before sewing the side seam as it would be less awkward and I would not cut the selvedges off and then the bottom of the bag would be stronger because it couldn't fray.  I chose to sew French seams on the sides of the bag to enclose the raw edges of the fabric and I made my handles about 2 inches shorter than the pattern which made the bag bigger.  Here's my bag.

I thought this fabric looked like it could have easily been wrapping paper. I ironed creases so you would know to fold the bag in thirds to roll it up and here's what it looks like all rolled up and held with the elastic and button.  Very convenient to throw in your purse so you're never without a bag.

On my next bag I think I will leave the button off and use a hair tie as the elastic since  you can simply slip the elastic around the bag to hold it rolled up, no button required.  I expect I will be making more of these bags.

Dear Jane - Three More Blocks Made

I didn't get any Dear Jane blocks made in February as I seemed to be doing something else every Thursday, so the first Thursday in March I was determined I would get some Dear Jane blocks made and I was able to complete three.

K1 was pretty straight forward with only four hst's and the rest strips or squares so I just pieced it.

K1 closeup.

K 13 was easy so went together quickly with piecing.

K 13 closeup.

L 1 was also simple to piece.

I'm down to 14 blocks left!

Progress on Two Mystery Quilts and the Fifth Snowflake Quilt

The third clue for the Mayflower Quilt Guild Scott Flanagan BOM came out.  Here's my Wheel of Chance block.

And here are the three blocks so far.

I skipped block two, but made all the rest of the Jelly Snowflake blocks.  I altered block three leaving off the snowballed corners and made the central block like a plus same as the fourth snowflake quilt I made.

I replaced the star blocks with a simple four patch and filled in with the background fabric.

While I was sewing the above projects, I was also sewing units together for the last Steps of Part 2 of the Mayflower Mystery Quilt #1.

Just 83 seams to go!
