Fat Quarter Shop 2017 Patchwork Quilt Along, Quilt Top Finished

Today I cut the striped fabric and sewed the mitered borders onto the quilt.  We've been having rainy weather and with the lights on, the colours are not true.  Once I quilt it, I will have to get an outdoor picture.

Here's a close up of one of the mitered corners.  I'm pleased with how they turned out.

Now I have several quilt tops in the queue to quilt.  I have material I can use for backing for this quilt so no excuse to not get it finished soon.

Fat Quarter Shop 2017 Patchwork Qult Along - Almost a Quilt Top

I finished sewing all the small sashing pieces into the rows and then it was time to put long sashing pieces between each row.  This is not my favourite thing to do because it is hard to line up the small sashing rows so they stay in line across the long sashing row.  I remembered seeing a hint to mark the un-sewn side of the sashing strip where the sashing edges run out from underneath it before pressing it open so that is what I did.

When I sewed the next row on, I used the pencil marks to know where to line up the sashing on the next row.  It wasn't perfect, but it worked quite well in my opinion as you can see from looking at the same block above sewn into the quilt top.

Here isthe quilt top with the entire centre sashed and ready for the final border.  The quilt is currently about 50" by 55".

And here is the fabric I am planning to use for the border.  The reds and greens in the border print are the same colours as the lighter red and green prints used in the quilt.

I'll mitre the corners which is not something I do often but will look good with the striped fabric. Well, as long as it turns out well that is....

What I'm Currently Working On

After I got the basket quilt top put together, and just before we went away on vacation, I pulled out another project that had the blocks all completed which just required putting them together and adding borders.  These are the blocks from the Fat Quarter Shop 2017 Patchwork Quilt Along.  I got them all laid out on the design wall and have the first two rows sashed together.

Then I got side tracked....  I love watching the Missouri Star Friday Tutorials with Jenny Doan and I really liked this one.   Missouri Star "Time to Sew" youtube quilt tutorial  I didn't follow it exactly but used it as the basis for my blocks.  My half square triangles finish at 2.5" which is half the size of Jenny's and I used them in all the corners of the blocks and did not use sashing.  I sewed twelve blocks together this morning and it is going to become a cover for my Q'nique Sewing Machine.

I have been wanting to make sewing machine covers for awhile now and the spools of thread seemed like the perfect pairing.  You must realize by now how I like themes!

Fat Quarter Shop 2017 Patchwork Quilt Along - Twelfth month

I actually made these blocks several days ago, but it was a rainy day so not good for pictures.  (Plus working on Christmas sewing was a priority.)  Then the sun came out but it was really windy.  Today was still sunny and less windy so here are my Mother's Own blocks for December:

Oops!  I didn't notice until I saw the picture that one of the above blocks is not the same!  I will have to fix it before I start putting the blocks together.....

And here are all 72 of my blocks:

I am really pleased with how they all look together and am looking forward to completing this quilt in 2018!

I have made my donation to the Atlantic Chapter of Make-A-Wish Canada.  If you want to see any details on this quilt-along, here's the link:  https://blog.fatquartershop.com/patchwork-quilt-along.html

Fat Quarter Shop 2017 Patchwork Quilt Along - Tenth Month

In my previous post (Two Bags and an Apron) I mentioned I made a bag in order to be able to use the leftover fabric and here is where I used it.  I am determined to make this entire quilt with fabrics I already own.

Here are my County Roads blocks for October:

Only two months to go!

Fat Quarter Shop 2017 Patchwork Quilt Along - Ninth Month

I actually did get these blocks for September done within September but then was away for a four day weekend to attend a family wedding so did not have time to blog until now...

Here are my Grandmother's Choice blocks for September:

And here are all my blocks so far:

I see I still have more variety from light to dark in the greens than the reds. I need a light red for next month.

Fat Quarter Shop 2017 Patchwork Quilt Along - Eighth Month

I'm as late as I can be and still get the blocks done within the month!  Prime vacation season is reducing my sewing productivity.

Here are my Rolling Nine Patch Blocks for August.

And here are all the blocks I've made so far.

Still using fabric I already have

Fat Quarter Shop 2017 Patchwork Quilt Along - Seventh Month

I'm a little late getting to these blocks again this month as I took my father to the cottage for a week. Also, since last month's blocks were late, it didn't seem like it was time to do the next blocks yet...

Here are my Propeller Blocks for this month.

And here are all the blocks I've made together so far.

So far I have been able to use fabric I already have which is great!

Fat Quarter Shop 2017 Patchwork Quilt Along - Sixth Month

I'm a little late getting to these blocks this month due to other quilt deadlines, holidays and a pain in the neck which limited the amount of sewing I could do in a day.  I have been walking the dog every morning for at least 5 kms and really like the natural woods trail in the park.  You really have to watch your footing around roots and rocks etc., so I had my head down a lot watching my feet which bothered my neck which is my Achilles heel. Now I only take the natural path in one direction and try to make sure I have my head up more. I'm a little sad to have to walk more on the crusher dust trails as you don't hear the birds as much as in the woods trail and you meet more people and bicycles so I have to keep the dog on her leash more, but my neck is happier so I can sew more which is a good thing.

Here are the Round the Corner blocks for this month.

And here are a couple of blocks in each colour from each month so far arranged from darkest to lightest.

A few more dark/medium green fabrics and light red fabrics should balance things out nicely.

Fat Quarter Shop 2017 Patchwork Quilt Along - Fifth Month

Here are the Homestead blocks I made for the fifth month of the quilt along.

And here are all the blocks so far.

I notice, with the green especially, that the blocks have gotten paler.  I will have to add some darker fabrics.

Fat Quarter Shop 2017 Patchwork Quilt Along - Fourth Month

Here are the Star & Cross blocks I made for the fourth month of the quilt along.

And here are all the blocks I've made so far.

These ones took a bit longer because of all the half square triangles, plus I joined a few pieces upside down so I had to rip and re-stitch 12 of them..... sigh.
