Yeah!!! Additional Borders Now on Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville Mystery "On Ringo Lake" Quilt

Yeah, now I just have to quilt this top!  Here is a picture with the lights on.

And here's a picture with the lights off which I think shows the true colours of the quilt a bit better without as much yellow in it.

Now to work on something that has to be done for Thursday which I can show you on Friday.

Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville Mysteries, "Good Fortune" Step 2 and "On Ringo Lake" Borders

Clue number 2 came out today for the "Good Fortune" quilt.  I now have a couple dozen less than half of the required half-square triangles made using the navy and neutral fabric.  Lots more dozens to go!

I have also been working on"On Ringo Lake" and now have all the pieces made for the additional border.  So now I just have to trim up the quilt and sew the borders on.

Sorry for the weird angle for the picture, but my sewing table is in the way of getting a picture front on to my design wall if I want to capture all the way to the floor.  I am really liking the dark brown edge to the quilt!

Two Borders Ready to Go on Bonnie Hunter's Quiltviile Mystery "On Ringo Lake"

I have made all the nine patches and have two borders pieced together to go on the quilt.  I was going to change the corner setting triangles, but I don't have a big enough piece of turquoise fabric left to use so they will stay as is.  I was hoping to bind it with turquoise fabric too, but will have to use brown or peach.  I like a dark binding so will likely use brown if I have enough.  I have lots of peach.

Bonnie Hunter's Mystery Quilts "On Ringo Lake" and "Good Fortune"

Last night I worked out the border I want to add to Bonnie Hunter's "On Ringo Lake" quilt.  It will give me an additional 5" so I will then have a 13" overhang.   Here's a small sample of what it will look like.  I have about one-third of the 74 nine-patches done.

I really didn't think I would participate in this year's mystery quilt because I didn't think I had any suitable fabric and I didn't want to go out and buy any.  However, I remembered I had bought several different bundles of Bonnie and Camille fabric at a garage sale and they might contain suitable colours.  So this is the fabric I decided to use.  Everything is Bonnie and Camille except the larger piece of coral fabric which, coincidentally, was also used in my "On Ringo Lake" quilt.

My blue is darker than Bonnie's and my green is lighter and I am using coral instead of orange, which I prefer.  Since this is a collection of fabric, I know these colours will work with each other.  Red is the same and the neutral background fabric is the same.

This is how much fabric I decided not to use, enough for another quilt.  I could have used turquoise instead of the green, but I think the green adds more pop.

So the first clue today was to make a very large number of fairly small red and neutral four patches.  I have about two-thirds of them done already.

Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville Mystery "On Ringo Lake" is Now a Finished Quilt Top ...... Kind of ......

I am pleased to say that today, the day before Bonnie Hunter's next mystery quilt starts, I have finished piecing her previous mystery quilt!  

 

It currently measures 76" x 91".  On a 60" wide queen size bed, the drop on each side would only be 8" which is rather skimpy on today's thick mattresses.  If I could add at least 4" on each side, it would then have a 12" drop.   So, I am contemplating doing something to make this quilt bigger.  I am thinking of making nine patches with brown centres and turquoise corners since they already appear in the quilt in the centre of each block and where the sashing meets at each cornerstone.   They would run on point around the quilt and be put together with a combination of peach and brown setting triangles.  I also think I will replace the current corner fabric.  So, back to the sewing room!

A Small Finish and Progress on a Bigger Project

Yesterday I put binding on the nine patch X and O Comfort Quilt and threw it in the wash.  I used three different strips of reddish fabric so the binding is as scrappy as the quilt.  Today it is all crinkly and finished.  Here's a picture indoors which shows the texture but the colours are rather dark.

Here are two more picture outside which show the colour better but less texture.  The quilt is about 28" square.

Today I worked on Bonnie Hunter's "On Ringo Lake" and have rows put together up to the half way point.

I thought it would take longer putting it together, so I am pleasantly surprised!

Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville Mystery Quilts

Bonnie Hunter recently announced the colours for this year's Good Fortune Mystery Quilt.  I'm not sure if I'm going to make it or not, but I told myself that I had to finish putting together last year's "On Ringo Lake Mystery Quilt" before the new one starts.  I only had eleven blocks left to put together with all the parts already made.  I worked on them on Wednesday and then again on Saturday and the blocks are now all done.  I also had to finish making the setting triangles and that is now all done too.  So, I have started to put together the quilt top.  This is how far along I got yesterday.  The first two diagonal rows are sewn together and the third row is laid out and ready to sew.

The first clue for the new Quiltville Mystery Quilt comes out on Friday 23 November so I have almost two weeks to finish putting this together.  This is loads of time to meet my goal and to decide whether to make her next one or not.

What I've been Doing for the Last Week

Saturday morning I did some skype sewing with my friend Marilyn.  I was working on Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville Mystery "On Ringo Lake" quilt.  I only have ten blocks left to put together and then can assemble the top except for the setting triangles which I haven't made yet.

Wednesday was an all day sewing day!  I attending the sewing session that my quilt guild holds every second week in the multipurpose room at a local grocery store.  I decided to start a new project for this since I would be using a small portable machine instead of my regular heavy duty machine and different machines can give slightly different seam allowances.  (This is my story and I'm sticking to it!)  It had nothing to do with the spring quilts I've been seeing on line and my long time desire to make a basket quilt.  You can find the instructions for the quilt I am making called  Fat Quarter Baskets here.  It was designed by Lynette Johnson and was published by Fons and Porter.  You can see the quilt here but do not download it from there as it contains a cutting error, use the corrected first link above.  I was able to get twelve blocks made and am using 18 fabrics from a collection of 40 fat quarters called Chestnut Street by Fig Tree & Co by Moda which I bought at a really good price from someone downsizing their stash.

Then I dropped the machine I took off my frame for servicing and to have the feed dogs put back in so I could use it as a regular machine and not just for free motion quilting.  I had some time to kill so I dropped into a local quilt store and wandered around and only bought a half metre of fabric which was 50% off.  Then I picked up my daughter from work and we went back to her place and did some sewing for an hour on the quilt we are making for her girlfriend's wedding.

Thursday I sewed together batting scraps in order to make four 18" square quilt sandwiches to take to a Walking Foot and Intro to Free Motion Quilt Class I am attending this weekend which is being taught by a very talented fellow quilt guild member.

I put the quilt sandwiches together out on the deck in the snow using basting spray which I had never used before.  I was able to get enough fabric for the sandwiches from some old cotton/polyester fabric which I have had for a long time which made me happy that I don't have to use "good" fabric for practice.  They are colourful at least!

I am really looking forward to this class and hope to show you my class samples, unless they are too hideous!

Touch Base Tuesday, More Planning than Sewing Today

Tomorrow I am going on a road trip with a couple of my Dear Jane group to purchase fabric at Avonport.  So this morning I spent time going through fabric to find all the suitable ROY G BIV rainbow fabrics I have for my Dear Jane Quilt so I will know what gaps I need to fill in. I'm very short of greens which really isn't a surprise.  I hope the quilt will look as good as my crayoned colour scheme!

I was also playing with the fabric combinations I have for my daughter and son-in-law-to-be's wedding quilt.  I had purchased a very light grey fabric for the background, but Ainsley would prefer a white tone on tone so will be on the look out for that as well.  The grey will be easily used somewhere else. I think I have enough of the main fabric.  The pattern is for 48 blocks, but I need to make 100, so a little over double the fabric requirements.  Once I have the background, I can start making blocks.

In the background of the above picture, you can see the Double Hour Glass Quilt I made in September that is all ironed and ready to go on the frame for quilting.

Bonnie Hunter's on Ringo Lake Mystery Quilt's last link up started yesterday and goes until Sunday, so I am going to see how much of that quilt I can get done before the deadline.  I made five more blocks today which gives me 26 done and 24 to go.  What's taking so much time is my flying geese units came out a little oversize so I am having to trim them all before I can sew the pieces together.

I also checked and so far I only have 23 blocks made for Bonnie Hunter's Leader and Ender Quilt.  I think the next one comes out in the summer so I will have to get a few more made.  I would like it to be a good sized comfort quilt, twin bed size would be nice.

And on the weekend Ainsley picked the fabric she wants for an apron.  So these are the projects I'm currently working on and dreaming about.  I say that because I woke up in the middle of the night making Dear Jane blocks in my sleep.  Making that second block yesterday after supper must have carried over into my dreams!

Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville Mystery "On Ringo Lake" Parts 7, 8 & 9

Tomorrow I will have to work on some other projects but would like to get a couple of blocks added per day and then will have to decide if I want turquoise triangles to finish it off.  I've see one that used the background colour which looked quite good too.

Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville Mystery "On Ringo Lake" Parts 5 & 6

I have now finished all of the brown flying geese blocks for part 5:

With all this sewing, I have already emptied a spool of thread so my spool collecting jar was only empty for one day!

Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville Mystery "On Ringo Lake" Parts 3 & 4

I  finished all my blocks for part 3 yesterday.  I found these parallelograms the most challenging block so far:

I got all the pieces for part 4 cut yesterday and sewed the blocks today:

The clues for parts 6, 7 and 8 have all come out in the last three days but most of them are for sewing parts made in the first several clues together so I don't feel I am far behind, and as Bonnie says, it's not a race....

Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville Mystery "On Ringo Lake" Part 2

I decided to go with the method of making flying geese using Bonnie's Essential Triangle Tool because I like the no waste aspect of it and also if there is less trimming than using the large squares of fabric to make four at once, I'm sold.  Here's a sampling of some of my completed geese and I think I will use this method in the future, I barely trimmed at all, and could probably have gotten by without the trimming I did do:
