Double Wedding Ring / Metro Rings Quilt, Quilting the Rings Started

I got the backing fabric on my frame and went to put the batting on and realised the only batting I had was the unbleached cotton kind.  Where the background fabric of this quilt is bright white, I didn't want to risk the unbleached colour showing through and dulling the white so I had to go get some white batting.  My husband helped me roll the batting on the roller, it is so much easier to do with two people.  I got the top on the frame and started quilting the rings in gray thread.  Here's a peek.  Don't look too closely though some of it is a little wiggly.  If I were better at free motion, I could be doing this quickly fee hand, but I am using rulers so it is going slow.

I now have one third of the rings quilted and it took approximately 7 hours.  Once all the rings are done, I will switch to white thread and start quilting the white areas.

We were away at the cottage for an extended long weekend again and while there I sewed the last seam on the quilt top.  Monday morning to be exact.

And now here's the final row and the two previous rows and the first half of the quilt which means only two long seams left for the quilt to be in one piece.

The lighting wasn't great because there are shadows from all the trees, but here's the finished quilt top hanging sideways on the clothesline at the cottage.

Today I purchased the backing fabric so the next step is to get quilting!

Double Wedding Ring / Metro Rings Quilt 5/6ths done

I was away from the sewing room for an extended long weekend but got back to work yesterday and completed the second last row, row five of six.  Here you can see the first three rows accordion pleated on the design wall to save space and rows four and five sewn together.

Row six will not take much time to complete.  Here it is laid out with just the grey pinwheel corners left to add with rows four and five folded up so I had enough space on the bottom of the design wall.

Double Wedding Ring / Metro Rings Quilt Fourth Row (2/3) Done

The only sewing I have been doing is working on the quilt for my daughter Ainsley and her fiance Jack.  I have lots of bits and pieces sewn together and today I finished the fourth row of six rows.  The first half of the quilt is accordion pleated on the top of the design wall so it takes up less room but so I can still see the layout of the coloured rings to keep me on track with the second half.

All the rings for the fifth row are sewn together in pairs and just need their grey corners sewn on and then trimmed and sewn together.  The rings for the final row have the background fabric sewn to them and need pressing and trimming so they can be sewn into pairs and then they will be ready for their grey corners so progress is being made.

Double Wedding Ring / Metro Rings - Half Done!

I am at the half way point of making this quilt for my daughter Ainsley and her fiance Jack so I thought it deserved a post.  First off, here's a close up of one of the pinwheels formed where the blocks meet.

And saved for last is a picture of the completed top half of the quilt.

Well, guess I better get back to work and make the second half!

Double Wedding Ring / Metro Rings, One/Fifth to One/Quarter Done

One quarter of the actual blocks are now fully sewn.  One fifth of the quilt is sewn together in one piece.

Maybe I just need the light not to shine directly on my design wall? 

Double Wedding Ring / Metro Rings Progress

I have sewn the curved arcs into one quarter of the quilt's blocks which means I have sewn 120 curved seams and I only had to re do one so far so needless to say I am very pleased and not a single pin was used! The lighting isn't the greatest, but this gives you an idea of what it will look like with nine different colours of intersecting rings.  I had ten different sets of coloured arcs, but decided not to use the grey ones.

This afternoon I started to add triangular corners and sew the blocks together.  I decided to use two shades of grey for the neutral intersecting corners which is why I decided not to use the grey for any of the arcs.  Here are the first four blocks sewn together.

I am liking it!  I hope Ainsley and Jack are liking it too!  360 curved seams to go....
